The Kenya government will soon stop the importation of maize from other countries and will start buying maize from farmers in the country.
Agriculture principle secretary Richard Lesiyampe has urged farmers to plant maize in plenty to avert future shortages which are now being experienced in the country.
Lesiyampe however said the government will continue importing maize till when it is harvested by farmers to ensure that there is no shortage of the important commodity.
He was speaking at Cheborge in Bureti sub-county, Kericho County during a farmer’s field day organized by Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate (KEPHIS).
The principle secretary lauded KEPHIS for assisting farmers in coping up with crop diseases, adding that the national government will be selling seeds to farmers which cannot be affected by diseases, including conducting field days so that farmers can improve their farming methods.
Meanwhile Farmers across the country are calling on the government to come up with a lasting solution to end the army worm menace that has been wreaking havoc in different parts of the country, threatening Kenya’s grain harvest.
Every county has now received one thousand five hundred liters of this insecticide called duduthrine that the farmers complain that it is like a drop in the ocean.
