The nights are the worst for Abongile Nojahi‚ a 25-year-old mother who lies awake wondering what has become of her nine-month-old son Olwethu.
It is alleged that on 3 June 2017, the mother of the baby was at her place of residence when her friend Zanele Mchunu (17) came to her house. She asked to borrow her baby since she was going to a mall. They both went away but they did not return home.
“This is so hard. I don’t sleep at night because I just lie awake and worry about where he is‚” she said.“She came to my house and asked if she could borrow my baby and I said that was fine. She said she would come back. I gave her my baby and by the time Sunday came‚ she had never come back‚” she said.
The 25-year-old unemployed mother said that she felt comfortable leaving her child with her friend‚ and did not find the request strange.
“She often looks after him‚ so it was normal to me. I have known her for a year and she is my neighbour‚” she said.
Mchunu’s phone now goes unanswered.
Olwethu was last seen wearing white vest and white short trouser. Zanele was last seen wearing a green pair of jeans and a multi-coloured shirt.
The South African Police and the parents are worried about the safety of the child, and advise anyone with the information of their whereabouts to contact Warrant Officer SV Mhlongo on 031 508 2330 or 073 254 2512 or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
