The House of Representatives, had on Tuesday moved for the review of the national minimum wage, to be done as a periodic exercise of every five years.
The bill to amend the National Minimum Wage Act has since passed through second reading.
House Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos) led the debate on the general principles of the bill during plenary. According to him, workers’ salary is a major component of workers’ welfare, thus the need for periodic review.
“The minimum wage shall be subject to periodic review every five years and the first review shall be effective from January 1, 2017 irrespective of the day the bill comes into force,” he said.
