During plenary session in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly today, the member representing Itu State Constituency, Hon. (prince) Idongesit Ituen raised a matter of urgent public importance, as he sponsors a bill seeking to address the noticeable shortages of nurses in the state health facilities.

The bill titled: ” The retirement of nurses from Akwa Ibom state civil service for the past two years. It’s Negative impacts on the state Hospitals and health Centres- A call for Action”.

The lawmaker observed that nurses have been retired within these space of time without a corresponding recruitment of nurses to replace the retired ones.

Prince Ituen among other reasons, stressed that “Health care delivery revolves around nurses”. -Hence, the need to recruit more nurses into the state civil service.

A motion supporting the bill was moved, by the member representing Etinan state constituency, Hon. Aniefiok Dennis and seconded by, member representing Mbo state constituency, Hon Asuquo Bassey Ufuo.

Subsequently, the Honorable speaker, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke, after acknowledging the importance of the bill, referred it to the house committee on health for proper investigation and prompt report back to the house within two weeks, for further legislative action.
