Twenty of the 24 members of the Abia State House of Assembly have impeached the Speaker of the House, Martins Azubuike.
The lawmakers elected Kennedy Njoku, representative of Osisioma Ngwa north constituency, to take over the leadership of the assembly.
The Deputy Leader of the House, Solomon Akpulonu, who moved the motion for Azubuike’s removal, gave reasons for the action.
The Cable reports that the three-term lawmaker had a falling out with the “powers that be” in Abia State and that he has faced at least four impeachment attempts since assuming office in June.
In Azubuike’s acceptance speech after his swearing in, the new speaker thanked members for the confidence reposed in him.
Njoku gave assurance that the House under his leadership would make laws for the good governance of the state.
