In 1967, Israel successfully captured its Arab neighbouring territories including the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem . On Friday 23rd December, precisely 49 years later, the United Nations (UN) security council adopted a resolution demanding a halt to all Israeli settlement in the occupied territories. This was after the United States refusal to veto the resolution.
In Netanyahu’s reaction to the United Nations Security Council vote at a Hanukkah candle-lighting ceremony as broadcast by Israeli television, he explained that “the decision that was taken was biased and shameful, but we will withstand it.” He further added that “It will take time, but this decision will be annulled” .
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu further hinted; “I instructed the Foreign Ministry to complete within a month a re-evaluation of all our contacts with the United Nations, including the Israeli funding of U.N. institutions and the presence of U.N. representatives in Israel, … I have already instructed to stop about 30 million shekels ($7.8 million) in funding to five U.N. institutions, five bodies, that are especially hostile to Israel … and there is more to come”. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Netanyahu did not give a comprehensive list of the five institutions or offer more details.
