DID IBORI EARN N250 WHILE IN PRISON?

Reports show that the former Delta Governor, James Ibori earned N250m while he was in jail in the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2016. Chief Ibori, who was accused of stealing over £250m, on April 17, 2012, jailed by Southwark Crown Court for his crimes was entitled to life pension in Nigeria.

As a former governor of Delta State who served between 1999 and 2007,signed into law the Delta State Governor and Deputy Governor Pension Rights and Other Benefits Law in 2005. Nevertheless, the law was amended in 2009 but his entitlements were not revoked while in prison.

An analysis of the law shows that an ex-governor is entitled to fifty million naira (N50m) per year among other perks. Calculations shows that between April 2012 and December 2016, that Chief Ibori spent in the UK prison, he would have been paid N250m by the Delta state government.
