As the Christmas day approaches, the various markets across the country has been full to capacity as Christians prepare for the yuletide. Amazingly, the Christmas shopping is not limited to Christians alone. In Nigeria, various concerns were raised on how the 2016 Christmas season would be celebrated since recession still bite hard on the country’s economy.
Surprisingly, the airports are very busy as many Nigerians still go for Christmas shopping abroad. In the Nigerian markets, gaining access to various shops has become very challenging as practically half of the Nigerian populace troop into various markets at the same time for purchase of goods. This prompted our reporters to visit few markets across the country.
At the popular Idumota market, Lagos, gaining access to and and fro the gates of the market has become as difficult as flinging open the prison gates. Walking through the crowd is similar to fighting a battle. To succeed, buyers have to push and be pushed. The ‘searing’ heat of the sun is not as important to the sellers as ‘making money’. If you are yet to shop for the season, you have to be there to catch the feel to tell the tale.
This is our local economy, this is Lagos; Shine your eyes!
